The National Centre for Dance Therapy, a division of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, offered a challenge to French choreographer Abou Lagraa and 19 female students from Calixa-Lavallée high school in Montreal-North. Their mandate? To create an original, 30-minute dance piece based on Pergolese’s Stabat Mater. From scratch. In just 5 days.
5 DAYS records the intimately raw, creative journey starting from Abou Langraa’s first meeting with his students at a Les Grands Ballets Canadiens presentation of Stabat Mater. The film concludes with a public performance in the new Grands Ballets amphitheater located in Montreal’s famous Quartier des spectacles.
5 DAYS paints a powerful portrait of a group of young women, aged 12 to 19, who are transformed through dance and classical music. The film takes place at the intersection of three dramatically different realities: the students’ multi-ethnic, inner-city neighbourhood juxtaposed with an internationally renowned choreographer, all happening under the auspices of the venerable Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal.
